Access Denied error When Attempting to Open XML Report File
This article explains why the ‘Access is denied. Error processing resource file:…’ error can occur after an XML report is generated using the Report Tool.
Below is a screen capture of an example error following attempted generation of an LFR analysis report using BrR v7.5.1:
A property of an XML file is that it can contain a command specifying an accompanying “style sheet” file (with an XSL file extension) that has formatting instructions telling the browser or application how to display the data.
A requirement with the use of XML files is that the XML report file cannot be located on a network drive while the XSL formatting style sheet file is located on a local drive. The XSL formatting style sheet file must be located on the same drive as the XML data file.
On the ‘Bridge Explorer’ / ‘Preferences’ / ‘Report Tool’ window, the default folder location where XSL style sheets containing formatting instructions are installed is ‘C:\ProgramData\AASHTOWare\BrDR7X’ (assuming the default installation is selected) as shown in the screen capture below:
The default location for the analysis output folder is ‘Documents’ as shown in the screen capture below:
However, because of problems associated with the ‘Documents’ folder, when it is set up by organizations to be synced with a cloud-based file backup service such as OneDrive, users are highly encouraged to change the default analysis output folder location from the ‘Documents’ folder to a folder on the local C: drive (refer to Technical Note TN0073 -- ‘Runtime errors caused by analysis output folder synced with cloud-based file service such as OneDrive’ on this page (password is brdr).
Another option some users choose is to set up their analysis output folder to be located on a network drive.
Setting up the analysis output folder to be on a network drive can result in an error in opening XML report files because the formatting style sheets are, by default, not located on the same network drive.
If the analysis output folder is changed to be on a network drive, two additional steps need to be taken.
First, the ‘Report XSL Folder’ needs to be changed to be located on the same network drive:
… second, the ‘Xsl Files’ folder located on the local C: drive needs to be copied to the network drive. The path needs to be consistent with the path used in the ‘Preferences’ / ‘Report Tool’ window.
